REPORT of the SHORT-TERM JOINT STAFF TRAINING EVENTS

"A FRAMEWORK FOR AN EFFECTIVE OCEAN LITERACY
TEACHING"

The Seminar lasted
3 days and involved 14 teachers, 2 from each partner institution and 4 from the
host school.
The Seminar has 3
parts. Its main objectives were:
- to
enhance teachers’ skills to the use
of innovative new teaching methods and techniques in school
- to increase the experience
of new learning tools and technologies that promote creativity and innovation
- to increase
their awareness of the eTwinning platform and the possibility it gives for a
professional development.
Day 1
Morning
Seminar (part 1): “Integrating
Etwinning in the school project”
Lecturer: Mr Ferhat Şimşek, an English teacher of 26 Haziran Ortaokulu Tokat, Turkey, actively engaged in
eTwinning for years. His school has received eTwinning Quality Labels.
Through slides he
showed the eTwinning Live platform, the Twin Space and the tools for the
development, publication of projects, share experiences and good practices. He
also presented a successful eTwinning project and highlighted that the criteria
to get the National and European eTwinning Quality Label are Collaboration
between partner schools, the use of ICT, pedagogical innovation and curricular integration.
Afternoon
The partners
visited the Kélonia aquarium and observatory specialising in marine turtles and
partecipated to a workshop on tools and didactic activities about ocean
literacy to be used into the classes.
Day 2
Morning
Seminar (part 2): “Environment and protection
of cetaceans on the island of Reunion” held by the Globice Association
that developes
research programs and participates
in raising public awareness (school interventions, public events and
conferences), conservation, and protection of the marine environment.
Afternoon
Seminar (part 3): “Using Apps in the
classroom”.
Lecturer: Mr Ferhat Şimşek, an English
teacher of 26 Haziran Ortaokulu Tokat, Turkey and an expert in digital teaching
tools in the classroom and beyond. He highlighted the use of Canva, Mentimeter and Padlet as a support of teaching, learning, communication, self-assessment
and creation of interactive materials for classroom use.
Day 3
The teachers in groups of 4 designed a
lesson plan sample and an evaluation rubric about ocean literacy in order to
develop responsible behaviour towards the ocean and their resources and enhance marine citizenship.
The certificate
ceremony followed during which the partners got the Certificate of Attendance
to the seminar and the Europass certificate.
The benefit of the participants
The Seminar had a
positive impact on the teacher as they
- experienced new learning tools and technologies that
promote creativity and innovation such as Canva, Mentimeter and Padlet
- gained a wider
understanding of practices, policies and Education systems in other European
countries
- increased the
intercultural understanding of similarities and differences among cultures
- enhanced their
skills in English
